Vacancy Film Review
Vacancy was a movie that made me think, hell this could be happening in the unforgotten parts of America or anywhere in the world really, the story of the films concerns snuff movies which are movies that show people actually dying in the films and sold as possibly a big business, much like the murder for profit story from Hostel.
A couple who are quite distant with each other at the start of the movie after the death of their son are travelling on the road until they predictably veer off the main road onto a side street which leads them to a motel and gas station which you just know is going to be a dodgy place and it is, as it looks like a really old 70's dingy looking motel that you just wouldn't stop there in real life, but then you just might if you got stuck out in the middle of nowhere like these two unfortunate people.
Kate Beckinsale pulls off a very convincing American accent and Luke Wilson (Owen Wilsons brother) provides the testoreone, even though you can imagine him screaming like a little girl. When they check into the motel there's a weird guy who is watching something were a woman is screaming and that is your first clue that it's a messed up fruit cake who is the motel manager, but they dismiss it until they get pestered by some unknown lunatics who bang on their door for a bit and then they find some snuff movie videos of the same room they are stopping in which freaks them out!
The movie has a few cliche clangers that have been put in other films, such as a policeman arrives and then gets killed which is very predictable, but overall the movie was quite watchable and not as bloody as I thought it would be, a lot is let to the imagination as to how long this had been going on long before the latest couple arrived on the scene, even when some of the snuff movies are shown, it is apparent that there is violence, but it all happens off camera and it is rather suggested.
The movies ending gave an average conclusion but was ok in a good way, as there was no abrupt cliched everyone gets killed at the last moment and then it ends type of ending, it ended more on a high note.
Good film, just that, it's a watch it once and why watch it again sort of movie!
