Midnight Meat Train Movie Review
61Midnight Meat Train Movie Reviewed
The Midnight Meat Train was originally a short story contained within the first volume of Clive Barkers Books Of Blood and who knew that it would make a really good horror movie even though it starred Vinnie Jones. Mind you he didn't have to say much as he played the Serial Killer Mahogany who kills his victims on the Midnight subway train (he only says one word right at the end) which seems to divert along a different track underground.
The story starts off with a photographer seemingly looking for his big break is told to get some urban moody street type photos and then they'll show his work in a exclusive gallery and so begins his journey whilst late at night he is drawn into an obsession to capture some unique photos of the serial killer Mahogany who he has worked out could be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people over the years on the midnight train.
The director of the movie Japanese director Ryƻhei Kitamura brings a uniquely dark and atmospheric feel to the movie and in the extreme edition there are some quite gory moments when Ted Raimi (Brother of Sam Raimi - Director of The Evil Dead movies!) gets the back of his head bashed in with a meat masher that sends his eyeballs flying with some rather effective CGI blood spilling. Other moments are also with the metal meat masher that knocks a womans head off, so with this in mind, the movie is not for light viewing at all.
The ending is a nice twist as some point in the middle you think "how is this guy getting away with murdering all these people?", well there is an explanation right at the end of the movie with a nice evil twist for our lead character played by Bradley Cooper. With the bloody gory moments aside the feel of the movie has a sense of dread which makes the supporting cast just seem like they are doomed and they are!
I've heard talk of a sequel but this movie is and will always be the superior one.
Dvd Extras - Clive Barker Behind The Myth a short documentary that shows a short interview with Clive Barker and his range of art that he has painted over the years, it's fascinating to watch Barker dig into his own mind about his artistic way of work and his ideas.
Anatomy Of Murder - which is a making of featurette that goes behind the scenes with some insights into the films production.
Mahogany's Tale - Featurette with Vinnie Jones talking about playing a serial killer.
Audio Commentary by Clive Barker and Ryuhei Kitamura which was a nice insight into what was filmed and what they wanted to show with some creative meat to chew on.
