How To Draw A Wizard

The drawing of wizards is and can be quite easy as they always tend to be old men with beards, but I draw lots of different ones as there should be variations of characters within your drawings anyway.

Wizards for the sake of traditionlists, are usually old, grey hair and grey beard that is just too long like they couldn't be bothered to shave and they wear long flowing robes and usually carry a staff and maybe the odd magical items for a little dressage. Typically they are more like a sage who knows all and is wise to all legends and could possibly see the future or predict the outcome.

Now in the first half of this drawing tutorial we will go into the details of drawing a wizard and how you would go about doing this creative task.

Now I've started to draw a wizard sketch to the right here and what I've done is just one example of a wizard and this is to inspire you to draw your own wizard drawing, the long robe on this old wizard I wanted to keep, but not really show the legs as I wanted to concentrate more on the top half of the wizard character.

I always ink 90% of my pencil drawings, because I draw my own comics often and this is the way I have learned, but you don't have to, you could just draw your wizards and then paint them.

When you do ink your drawings however it is best not to just go over your pencil lines, the best thing to do is to try and improve on your wizard drawing with dark areas that separate your drawings important parts like arms and costume details,so that they stand out and are more noticeable.

I use any kind of ink pens, even permanent markers do the trick quite well such as Sharpie markers, but you can use whatever you are most comfortable with.

When drawing a wizards head, I've opted for the classic view of a wizard and that is of an older man with a long beard, so there's no Harry Potters in sight, in the following video I take you through a quick drawing of a wizard and you can see how I approached the drawing of the head, sometimes I might use an oval shape for the head and then the classic cross guide for the eyes or other times I will just start to draw from the top of the head and work my way down. filling in bits at a time, like I did in the video below.

Of course there are some classic images of wizards around if you do a Google search to inspire you to draw your own wizards.
