Choosing A Domain Name

One of the most important things about selecting your domain name is to find some good keyword variations that are available so your site can rank good in the search engines, one of the best sites for Domain name registrations is Godaddy.com and I use this for all of my domain name dealings and it's easy to use to register a domain.

The first thing to do obviously is to create a new Godaddy account if you don't already have one and fill in the form with all of your details as per usual with any site you sign up to, once this is done you can start to fully search for your own domain name (although you don't have to sign in to search for a domain name!) and what I like to have handy is two other window tabs with one for google searchesand the other with the Google Adwords keyword tool to fully research some keyword variations for your domain name selection.

Now what I do is to run a few random searches through Godaddy's search tool so I can gather some available ideas and when I do, I write them down or save them in a notepad text file on my computer for later reference, now what I do with these domain name availables is I run them through some keyword research to see if there are a not too high number of searches but enough for them to be good enough for my purposes, so for example if I chose an available domain name like biguglyfrogs.com then my keywords would be "big ugly frogs" first and see what others that are related to that will come up.

The adwords keyword research tool is a good tool that is free and is really all you need, but I like to back up my keyword research with a little bit of page result rankings just to see if A) there are any sponsored ads at the top of Google listings and at the right of the listings, because this tells us that there are advertisers paying for placements with similar keywords, so there is some money to be made out of contextual advertising if you want to or B) to see how many page results there are for that keyword term, so I'd know what and who I'd be up against competing for that search term if the results are good for me to continue.

The domain name extensions that are most common and the best are typically .com or at the very least .net, any other domain name carries it's own weights for specific geographic areas, such as .co.uk domain names which are targeted to UK websites, but with the element of choice it is best to go with a .com if possible and all you have to do is search using the sites search bar tool by selecting the correct domain extension at the end, the .com extension is already there by default as it is the more popular.

I've often found myself stuck on the site for a few hours researching and selecting a domain name as it is an important decision I think, if you want to find a memorable domain name for your new website and with the cost of a domain being very cheap at $10.69 for a .com domain (even cheaper if you can acquire a coupon discount through an affiliate site!!)

If you have some cash to spend why not have a look through the domain auctions at Godaddy, although there are some expensive ones, who knows what you may find up for auction there, I once found earningprofitsonline.com for $15 which was a bargain and although my site is simply used as a test site for everything affiliate and marketing I know that it could be a good ranker if I did something more with that site.

Finding the right domain name is something that will become harder and harder as things become even more long tail with keyword variations, of course there premium domain names are there, although most of the times, Godaddy doesn't own these domain names and simply act as a third party seller between the original owners and so some of the premium domains can be expensive, but it's something to think about.

Of course like anything on the world wide web there are other domain name registrars out there, so ifGodaddy isn't for you then go and search online for more places to select that perfect domain name.
