Drawing The Incredible Hulk

The hulk is one of my fondest comic book memories as a child and they way he has been drawn by some of the best comic book artists like Jack Kirby, John Romita Jnr, Erik Larsen and my favourite comic book artist Dale Keown.

The hulk was created after a gamma radiation explosion exposed Dr Bruce Banner to the full blast of the exploding gamma rays and so in times of anger Bruce would transform into the Hulk, a huge green giant who would always retain his top half of his trousers for some odd reason and it always used to be purple trousers, who wears purple trousers?

As a kid I used to try and draw the hulk, practicing here and there by drawing the full Marvel cast too, but the Hulk was always a favourite because he just gets angry and throws tanks around with the "Hulk Smash" and "puny humans" that he was often quite fond of saying.

Drawing the Hulk became easier over time as the more you draw, the more you learn about drawing muscles and anatomy of the standard comic book form, I soon found myself enjoying drawing again after a brief flirtation with drink.

Here I will draw the Hulk in a step by step article because the Hulk is the best!

Drawing The Hulk: First Sketches

When I always try and draw the hulk or some other large muscle bound creature, I always keep the form in mind because that is a big part of the hulks design, as he has no real superhero costume, just raggy pants most of the time.

Plus drawing muscles in all the right places is good practice for drawing any other types of figures and they look really powerful too.

The Hulks Figure And Form Development

Really just an extension of the first step, building on the drawing of the hulk with more detail and muscle definition, I add all the details I can at this point as I want to ink it in the next stage as quick as possible, so that replicating drawing new concepts become faster each time, because there is only so much time in a day, we want to maximize our end results that much quicker as an artist.

Inking The Hulk Pencil Drawing

Adding ink to the hulk drawing is your chance to change things a little, and to add some other lines that will benefit the Hulks form, a good sense of light and form could prove useful, but this is not important if you want to do this on your computer and colour your Hulk drawing in.

I find inking your final drawings as a way to finalize the drawing and round it off by creating permanent lines that appear darker and print well if you need some more copies.

Enjoy drawing the hulk!!

Thanks Mike!

It is my new years resolution to do more of these drawing tutorials as I've slacked off lately with testing other article content that is really to test different keyword variations.

I liked it when they made the Hulk super smart but still strong, so there was no need for him changing, I believe it advanced the story, but unfortunately I haven't read the latest adventures of the hulk, so I've no idea what he is like now!

Yes, I vaguely remember the Mr Fixit era....didn't the hulk used to be grey at one time too?

I always tremendously enjoy your superhero art, and I'm often interested in how it contrasts with my own--a difference I attribute to our respective comic eras.

I also admit I was less fond of the "Hulk smash!" persona than the psuedo-tough guy attitude he sometimes adopted. I enjoyed the "you always were a clown" type of dialogue...don't know why.

Without digressing into nostalgia too much, remember the "Mr. Fixit" era?

Just takes practice, try and draw arms and then work up to other areas like the legs, the more you practice the better your drawings will be!

I remember the 70's hulk tv series and I remember being dissapointed at the hulks hair and that he never threw tanks around, it was only later that I realised about budgets and limited money for tv programs, although I never hid behind the couch as a child, I did however remember that I was very scared of the marshmallow man out of the first ghostbusters film...now that was very silly!!

I really enjoy your character drawings. I remember being scared of the Incredible Hulk show when I was a kid and hiding behind the couch. That was pretty silly really lol.
