Drawing Fantasy Art: How To Draw A Robot

Drawing Robots

Robots, made of metal, wires and other metal parts of armour plating. There are many types of robots you can draw and they are very easy to draw, starting from circles and cylinders, or if you want to be funny, sausage and balls.

These are good frameworks to build up a cyborg or robot, as the joints and head could be the circles and the arms and legs cold be the cylinders. I find this the best way to draw robots, also if you exaggerate the two simple shapes with a little bit of imagination you can create all manner of different sized robot designs.

In our drawing study, we are going to go through the steps to draw your very own robot.

Drafting The Robot

Here we try and go for the framework of a robot design, we want to just capture the basics of our robot and we do this as mentioned above sausage and balls circles and cylinders, these create the arms, legs and all the joints, it's only the body that is another shape entirely.

Try drawing your robot design with fatter or thinner circles and cylinders or even larger, this could create a totally different robot design altogether, right now at the drafting stage anything goes!!

Building Up Your Robot Drawing

Developing The Robot Drawing Further

The further development of your robot becomes easier when you just go with the flow, robots are clunky looking things, but if you follow the steps of using the circles and cylinders you can end up with humanoid looking figures for your robot which looks more better, but really that's not important, it's the structure of your robot design that matters at the very beginning.

I have added a gun on the robots left arm and other design elements that make it look like a robot.

Finalising Your Robot Design

Fix Your Robot!

Fixing your robot is just a matter of straightening up the legs and the head and a few other bits and pieces, this is the final details of your robot drawing just to try and get it right.

Your drawing however may be slightly different and I encourage you not to draw the way I do, more like take your own ideas and concepts and turn them into something totally original.

Your robot sketch should start to look a little clearer now.

Fully Inked Robot Drawing

Black And White Line Art Robot

Inking a drawing is one of my last steps that I do to cement the line art and the initial concept in a more permanent form, adding black ink doesn't have to be complicated with multiple cross hatching or anything like that, we just need to go over the pencil lines and improve on them if possible.

If you look at the previous robot sketch, there are slight differences to the final version here, just remember that even though this is the final drawing, you could possibly alter it some more if you have a good computer art software package such as photoshop.

Well I hope you enjoy drawing robots!

can't wait for the more complex robots i just began drawing a few months ago i used to be terrible at drawing and awesome in sculptures and then a few months ago i began to draw well all of sudden

Cheers there Roxsox! I can draw better robots than this and I intend to do a few more robot drawing tutorials with even more complex robots quite soon.

I'm glad you tried drawing a robot, the main thing about these tutorials is to mainly inspire people to draw their own versions of characters and designs and that's my main aim....

Nice as always. I can draw the robot from Lost in Space or Robotman from the original Doom Patrol comics. Anything original I do ends up looking like one of those two.

Thanks for sharing as always.

Thanks Amez!

The best thing to do is when you finish one piece of art, take a good copy of it before you sell or give it away, this is what I do with my best art or drawings and paintings.

Would love to see some portraits!!

Great Sketches, your a Natural Artist. I enjoy looking at your work. I most draw Protraits. Problem is I never thought much about saving any for my own, so I don't have many to show. I'd give anything to get copys of them all again.

Yes have a go, because I intend to do a few more robot drawing examples eventually.

I think Robots are one of the coolest things to draw because when you draw them it's like programming them.

It's really fascinating.

P.S. The drawings really really good!

I will try drawing this one today, definitely.

I would watch some dancing on the tv and record it then freeze frame and draw from what you see or find pictures online of two people dancing and then use that as reference.

Yes I still have those Todd Mcfarlane spiderman comics and Spawn and pretty much everything else he did...the hulk, yes his inking is the best with lots of detail and a great style too, in fact there are loads of artists whose inking is amazing and it's no wonder they are making a living from it!!

Cheers there Ben!

Exquisitely rendered, thanks for not laying into me on my beginner's drawing page! Now how do you draw a robot dancing, or conversely, someone dancing the robot? Nice inkwork, are you a fan of Todd McFarlane's Spiderman? That guy changed what I thought I knew about inking.
