Horror Films
Horror movies and why they are popular
Anyone who likes horror films should watch them at least once every day if possible, some of them are hilarious, others are so serious they try to make you believe that no one had a laugh making them. It's a combination of the funny and serious horror films that you should be watching at any one time, without the laughable ones you'll end up suicidal and without the most serious horror you would have pissed yourself long ago and would be dry forever!!!!
Of course I'm talking more about the classic end of the 70's onwards, as anything before this time is a different era entirely, from B-movies to the classic 50's horror films that your mum would shiver at and your dad would cheer at, and we would just shrug our shoulders at and laugh at the typical screaming woman and the bumbling creature of the time and think that this passed off as horror back in their day.
The 80's carried a lot of weight in the slasher and horror genre, so much so that we had loads of stuff to choose from, some of it carried over from the 70's like Friday the 13th and Halloween and others existed in the 80's and were more suited like Evil dead 2 and Hellraiser, and something that was more typical than not was the fact that all horror films back then had the lowest budgets of all time, and it was these that were more inspiring to me than the TV movies of drama dribble that the networks spewed out, particularly in America(more money than sense, half the time!!)
Horror movies are very popular because of the gore and the horror of the monsters and the creatures, although there are some horror movies that are just passable in terms of originality as they either copy another horror film or they just regurtitate the same gory visuals as the last horror reel. There have been some quality horror gems recently though with films like Splinter, Silent Hill and The Mist, all which were effective in their own right of bringing something new with a twist and with quite some shocking imagery.
Horror films should really be a great source of scares and something else to add to the mix, something that creates a sense of fear to be sure, but also something that leaves a bitter after taste in your mouth, like an abrupt killing of the main character right at the end or a twist that haunts you as the movie ends. One of the things that I like about horror mvies is that they can be unpredictable when you first watch one, they can be either run of the mill story wise or they can surprise you in many different ways and being unpredictable certainly is the way to go as that fear of the unknown is more prevelant.
Certainly in recent times there has been a shift in the way horror is percieved, because Japanese horror movies have been remade and then classic movies have been remade too like Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street. Japanese horror is slightly different and can be made to more effective in the way it's produced, although there is the cliche now of ghosts with black hair now in most Japanese horror films like The Grudge, but diferent world legends and myths lend themselves to create a different type of horror movie.
When you watch a horror movie, do you turn the lights off or do you leave then on? I always like to have the lights out, because the light always interferes with the movie in a subtle way that makes it unbearable to watch the whole movie, especially as most horror films are in the dark anyway. So darkness is always the best and if the movie scares you, then just reassure yourself that it's all make believe and not real, because all that blood getting thrown around is really tomato ketchup or what they call corn syrup.
Watch some Horror!
