The Mist - A Film Review

The Mist is one of them movies that sort of reminded me of the fog(the clues in the title) were a strange mist descends on a small town and follows the story of a group of survivors trapped in a shopping mall as they begin to wonder what the strange mist is and the creatures that lie within the murky mist.

The story unfolds with many that start the same way, the characters are all set up for them to be picked off one by one and as usual in most of Stephen Kings film there is a religious nutter in the film( would be welcome on the forums here at hubpages!) as the characters begin to take sides against the mystery of the mist and why it came about, the film follows some small monster shocks, but nothing really that impressive, except for the design of the creatures as they were created by popular comic book artist Bernie Wrightson who drew one my favourite comic books Swamp Thing.

Starring Thomas Jane who starred in that other classic King Film Dreamcatcher whose family is caught up in the mist as is everyone...

The mist follows some of the more classic formula for horror films and some might even say cliche, but there are some nice touches to the story, although I have never read the book, the story takes off when we see people die whoo hoo! as the tension builds as to what this mist could be, but then it goes back to basics once we discover how this happened, overall this film gives a sense of hope for the survivors right until the end that is...let me tell you I absolutely hate bleak endings in any film and this film was the most bleakest you could get( no spoilers here!)

So from beginning to end The Mist draws on our simple fears of the unkown and what could lurk in a blanket of mist and there are a few underlying themes that concern god and beliefs(again let us debate that in the hubpages forum lol!) and also the question of what we do as people in a crisis of this type deal with it, people go crazy or they become heroes or they just get themselves killed.

After thoughts of this film: I still think about that ending as it was quite sad and very depressing to so much of a degreee that it put a downer on the rest of my dvd night, I nkow that good endings can be so formulaic too, but so can bleak endings, there has to be some balance against what we hope to expect at a films final act.

The monsters were quite original, escpecially the octopus thing, although some did look like casts off from somewhere else that I cannot place which was weird, but all in all the monsters were the best thing of the film and the most annoying was the religious nutter (good job she was dealt with at the right moment!)

I liked the film overall as it unsettled me at the end and maybe that was the point of that ending, so great film..go and watch it, if you have not seen it yet!

Did anyone else notice that 3 actors from the Walking Dead series were in this movie?? How's that for cool casting.

Love this movie. Perfect scares and the drama between the people in the store is great. The changed ending is really really depressing though.

This is one of my all-time favorite horror movies.

The black and white version owns my soul.

Stephen King has a unique writing style that I truly enjoy reading. His books, which have been turned into movies, are just as enjoyable. Scary, but enjoyable!

I love Stephen King and have read many of his novels, but the ending of this one haunts me to this day.

Yes there are some classic films that have been made for tv which were not so good, but there are some classic ones that were a hit in the past like Carrie, Cujo, Graveyard Shift, Christine, Dreamcatcher and Sleepwalkers to mention just a few.

I've only read a few of his books, although trying to keep up with his work is quite difficult, because he writes so much each year...

If you are a Stephen King fan this is a great movie. None of his movies are really high budget but dam that guy has a warped mind. He has been my favorite writer for at least 20 years.

Great review.
