Book Of Blood

The Book Of Blood was a fairly strange and oddly disturbing movie which on the face of it seems like a simple Paranormal research into an apartment that seems to have been haunted by evil spirits that in a scene that sees a girl being thrown around in a room and then having her face pulled off by evil ghosts which was quite scary but interesting at the same time.

The book of blood is something that is explained in the film and really I won't spoil it here as it all makes sense right at the end of the film with a few weird ghostly occurrences along the way. This movie was inspired by the short Clive Barker story of the same name within the first volume of The Books Of Blood, an anthology of horror short stories that Clive wrote back in the 80's in between travelling with his stage show production company.

The story begins in a cafe of some sort with a mysterious looking (as it appears) a homeless man eating bacon and eggs and sipping his coffee with cuts all over his face, it sort of sets up the story for what has happened and will happen later on towards the end of the film as a Scottish bloke is hired to cut off the mans skin.

The interesting thing about this movie is that it all focuses on 3 central characters really and it follows the short story quite closely in that the dead feel like they are being mocked by people who won't listen to them. Another great thing about this haunted horror movie is that there are no over the top moments and much Supernatural fluff that you would see in any of the Poltergeist films, it's just about one or two characters in the movie that the story revolves around and that seems more credible and realistic.

It seems that Barkers own short stories are going to be plundered for more movie ideas and that as it seems is a good thing especially if they turn out like this and Midnight Meat Train and some of Barkers earlier movies like Hellraiser and Nightbreed.

So if you like your horror dark and with nice twists at the end, then this is for you.

This movie was definitely different than your typical horror flick which was a refreshing change. The first half of the movie left you guessing which was very good, and the ending was a little predictable, but still good too. Nicely written review.

Yeah his novels are really good, I'm liking the Arabat series for it's sheer imagination on names and characters and the worlds he creates....

I like the movie Nightbreed, but I can't seem to get it on DVD at the moment unless it's an import....

I love Clive Barker novels. He makes them so vivid and real even though they are clearly a figment of his imagination. My fave Clive Barker novel is Weave World.
